How do we ensure that AI augments human skills rather than making people overly reliant on technology for emotional interactions?

As AI becomes more integrated into communication and emotional support, there is a risk that people may become dependent on it rather than developing their own emotional skills. How can we design AI to enhance rather than replace human-to-human interactions?

The key is balance. AI should be a tool, not a substitute. If people start relying on AI for all emotional interactions—whether for conflict resolution, social reassurance, or decision-making—there’s a risk of emotional atrophy. AI design should prioritize nudging users toward real-world interactions rather than acting as a constant intermediary. For example, an AI therapist might provide emotional support but also encourage users to seek human connections. Regulations and ethical guidelines should emphasize AI’s role in enhancing emotional intelligence, not replacing it.
